Rainy weekend

Processed with VSCOcam with lv01 presetHello there again! I woke up this Saturday with a bunch of thoughts at my head swirling around…today is the day that I have to make plans, organize myself and next week’s work, tidy up my home-because you can’t work in a chaos, and then maybe tidy up my head and in general DO stuff!! It’s gonna be a really hard week and I should be prepared and ready, don’t you think?
And as all these must happen it’s been a while that is raining cats&dogs here! The sky is dark, you feel like the night has come already and all I want is spend the whole day in bed, under blankets watching TV series!

I imagine myself being a (cute) snail as I recede into my ‘house’ and prepare myself for next days! I would be a weird snail though doing that when it rains, I know…

Have a nice and relaxing weekend y’all!

Fall patterns, again!

Molly from the movie ‘The Breakfast Club’ – Beginning of school and discipline, in the right colors! By JTO JTO

Seeing that last year’s post about Fall patterns is one of your favorite, I prepared another one these days to feed our (because it’s mine too!) desire for seasonal patterns to put us in the mood for Autumn!
Funny thing that when I was younger I didn’t like this season at all! I imagine because of the beginning of school and the end of summer carelessness etc etc. On the contrary, as I grow up I am so ready for all the changes of this transition that I even can’t wait for them! I’m so eager for cozy nights and weekends, the new face of nature all around us, excursions to the woods, warmer palettes of colors, cozier outfits and homey feeling!

Happy Sunday guys, let’s enjoy Fall!!

Nature and foxy themed in earthy tones! Orange foxes – I don’t know why but this animal is stuck in my mind as a fall’s element, falling leaves, new pinecones – the last one was such a hit! – and of course pumkins!

Sweeter tones with some blush pink and pomegranates! And of course-again foxes, cooler this time.

Closing this patterns’ party with my favorites, mostly for the feeling they create. Swallows for the migratory birds of this season, school/office stuff with pencils and erasers – it’s the time to concentrate again and do the real business, the first hot coffees of the year…knitting of course 🙂 beside the fire even better, with a purring cat at your lap (my favorite!!) and then as we have the rains what’s more suitable from rubber wellies!

Folegandros | The Sea

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

A tiny beach next to Agali, beautiful to look from above

As the temperature in Athens is still hot -despite the first days of October- I take the opportunity to post about my main summer vacations! And get some of the vibes that are so precious!!
The first days of September we went at the small&distant yet magical island of Cyclades, Folegandros! I’ll make 2 parts of it because there is such beauty that I simply can’t limit the photos. At this part we’ll have our jaws dropped by the clearest and tempting waters of the island! If I should distinguish one thing from Folegandros would definitely be the beaches. At least for my taste that I love pebbled beaches, blue and deep waters and calm and isolated-if nudist even better, this was a paradise. You should know though that you’ll have to get supplies with you definitely and an umbrella because usually there is nothing there.

However, we were unlucky with the weather. It was SO windy these days that couldn’t go at any beach whenever we wanted. And because of the cold wind I felt really chilly sometimes! Brrr… I’m not famous for my tolerance to cool water anyway!
So, to get an idea of what Folegandros was for us the first days you can take a look at the following pictures and see: The wild situation of the see! The dry and rocky land that dominates (with some goats here and there) and the Karavostasis where the port is. When we say port though don’t think of what you’re used to, check it out to understand!

One of the most accessible and easy beach was Agali, in the middle of the island. Its name means “hug” as the land subsides like one so that the weather isn’t such a problem. However because of that there is always crowd which I don’t love…It was very nice in general but I liked more to look at it from above!

As I told you all these days the wind was pitiless! After asking some local people we started exploring some more “secret” beaches that you had to walk through pathways. The first day we attempt exploring  Fira beach which is 10′ from Agali. Along the way we were very surprised sometimes by what people consider “pathway”!!! After all, we took the right way every time but I think it was only a matter of luck! I was of course fearless….
Besides the view from there was magnificent, so I was only impatient to reach the beach. And we were very well paid off as you can see!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Happy swimmer

To find a quiet beach, with rough beauty, after all the wind and crowd was such a delight! All the beaches from that day on were amazing. I was swimming for hours, sunbathing after the cool water to get the right temperature, reading my book (‘The woodpecker’ by Tom Robins which I finished there and totally loved it!!) wearing my mask and seeing SO many fishes underwater that I enjoyed it a lot!!!! Also, as you’ll notice, I was very proud of my pedicure 😉

Some other beautiful beaches were St. Nicolas, Galyfos and Livadaki, on the south part of the island. Again by foot or by boat. Quite small all of them if you are used to large, endless beaches and I imagine if someone visits the island on high season they can be very very crowded.

On the following picture we can see some old guys trying to pull a boat out of the water with no good results…As I was waiting for G. to help them I was taking photos…

The best beach in my opinion was Katergo! It was our favorite by far and thankfully the wind stopped for one whole day (wow) so that we could see it. I mean, magnificent…We didn’t want to leave that beach. A high cliff behind us, a large beach so that all the people can spread out and clear, refreshing waters for swimming for hours. Beautiful scenery.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Katergo beach – the best!!!

Another, rather quiet and small beach was Ambeli. Very rocky in general, wilder as an environment, but what I loved the most was the way until there. Not so the driving part-which was very atmospheric indeed- as the walking part till the beach. You have to pass through small paths under trees so that the beach is revealing itself at the end and you feel like you found a treasure!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Heading to Ambeli beach, seems like we’re gonna find a treasure!

It’s also nice to catch a sunset there or on your way back and stop at Ano Meria, a small village, to see the sunset and eat local delicacies as matchata pasta with rooster…yummy!! The best closing for a day at this beach!

Summer holidays at North Euboea

summer_euboia_mbf_00

Panorama shot of my favorite beach

At last I found some time to write a post about a part of my summer vacations! It’s fall already but everyone enjoys some summer spirit even if summer has gone, right?
So, here I present you my time at north Euboea during August! We went by car, passing through Euboea which was magical if you are a strong driver! The first day of our trip was not so summery because the weather was just the opposite! Rain and cold but on the top of the mountain we stopped for a hot cheese-bread that calmed us for ever!! Then as you can see on the photos above we made a stop somewhere to rest and we found out a small river there! It was just after the rain and the scenery was beautiful!

summer_euboia_mbf_06

When we arrived at G’s village we were welcomed by his grandmother and the cats! We ate some figs with cheese and the proper summer had just started!!
We stayed for a few days only but we had a great time. Swimming all day at paradise beaches, eating like kings, playing with the dapper cats that required quite patience I must say and relaxing a lot……

This cutie was so low-voiced that was like been in silent mode

As you can see the beaches there are superb!! Just like I want them: quiet and calm, less people the best, with pebbles, clear blue waters and fishes to explore on the inside! One day the sea had a lot of jellyfishes (not harmful though) that scared me but G and I made a silly song about them so we had fun eventually!

summer_euboia_mbf_12Some of our equipment! The floating sea-animals (or sea-vehicles) weren’t ours unfortunately. And some of what we were seeing while lying down.

As we were staying all day at the beach we were present during the sunset. Which was magical. I loved the serenity of that time on that beach!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I must say that I’d taken my new camera for the first time so I tried a lot (!) of sunset shots!! It was hard of choosing just some of them!

Returning from the beach that day as the sky was magnificent-obviously-we saw an owl that stopped just in front of our car!! I was so excited!!!

Material trend | Terrazzo

I don’t know if you’ve noticed that more and more terrazzo is used in high aesthetic renovations. Not only because we used it in our Room18 proposal, but I love it!!! I want it everywhere, on floors, walls, furniture, details! It’s so chic, bold, down to earth and architectural that with the right material combination it can transform a room. It highlights the general design of a space with a humble yet aristocratic way. I could say that terrazzo is the new cement that I hope is here to stay.

It’s not by luck that the best known brands have used it in their retail stores with high success. Valentino, Prada, Issey Miyake are some of them, presented at this post. Especially Valentino uses terrazzo at every retail store in the world, keeping the same style and giving us more chances for our jaws to drop! Here we see the New York, Rome and Paris’ stores, designed by David Chipperfield Architects.
See for yourselves below how the products come up like art exhibits or jewelry!

The size and color of the chippings varies so that we can have different styles and even combine them for a bolder result!

Of course floors, walls and other components aren’t the only way of using terrazzo. Furniture, counters, sinks and objects by it are very beautiful too! I absolutely love this minimal aesthetic, don’t you? Check out the kitchen here and the bathroom here.

Or how about almost the whole bathroom? I’ll take it! Extra points at the white, minimal accessories and the general minimal design.

Stairs also can have terrazzo and speak to our hearts directly…
Stairs on the left Stairs on the right

However, my favorite terrazzo application is at these spinning lightings! Mari Goga is the designer of them, Greek and inspired! I’m so in love with them, I’m already thinking how on earth I could have one of these…for now I only dream about it. Aren’t they super lovely?

Below you can see other applications in a different, even funkier way. Terrazzo can be colored of course and rule the room! I would be in a great dilemma which one I should use in a renovation, grey or colored…Which one do you prefer??

You can check our ‘Room18’ entry in this post, where we used terrazzo on the half of the room and we nailed it! hehe

August | Let the summer begin!

dive_mbf

First day of August and the living is easy… or I wish it was! As I get closer and closer to my vacation days it’s getting even harder to focus and work! What about you? I must ignore the sirens and do stuff but all I think is a deep dive into the sea and forget about everything…

So, what did you do the weekend? I had a very special time because my best friend is getting married in a month and we had all kind of preparations! Wedding dress fitting and 2 kind of bachelor parties! One night version of it (At a beach bar, drinking cocktails and wearing funny stuff) and one morning version of it (traditional hammam treatment!!!) This second one was my favorite! I’ll talk about it next days, I hope..

So, you tell me, how can I work after such a weekend!? Impossible!!

Room 18 | My team’s proposal

Room18 3D1_mbf

I may present you my team’s submission for the international architectural competition Room18 that took place last month! We spent so much work and thinking in it, a lot of stress in the end to meet with the deadline but we enjoyed it a lot and I’m really proud of the result, so I share it with you!

The competition was aiming at rethink the usual living in a city hotel’s room, reinvent the conditions and make a pioneer proposal for the contemporary traveler. The place of the hotel was supposed to be somewhere in Greece, in a city.

So, we spent hours and hours of thinking and reading about what a traveler seeks nowadays, what we would like in our visits at hotels and what could be unconventional enough but not very crazy and risk our submission (this was a mistake apparently if u look at the winners!) Our pursuit was the stay to be integral part of the whole traveling experience. And we wanted the user to be able to personalize his stay in many levels, the space itself and the facilities through advanced technology. To be able to interfere with the staying conditions according to his personality and needs.

Room18 3D2_mbf

Eventually, the concept was born slowly and I must say that only when we finished it we knew what it was! Our main idea was the room to be like an outdoor space, like a square or a house’s yard. With the natural light, sitting points on the ground or mantels, a touch of greenery, the open bathroom like you’re at your country house’s backyard and all these in an irregular layout.
However, we wanted to offer a luxury experience in this outdoor feeling so we used sophisticated materials and design. We used some traditional city house’s materials such as the wooden floor, the wooden panels to filter the light in fish bone motif, terrazzo in reference of the mosaic floors of Greek houses in the past, the skylight element in the bathroom with the climbing ivy, glass instead of wall partitions for transparency and clean feeling at the bathroom area and bronze for a shinny touch!

Key design element was the diagonal that runs the room, separates and organizes it and creates spaces, acute/obtuse corners and nooks. The diagonal alignments are very common in Greek traditional architecture, mostly in yards, terraces and open spaces.
Also, it contains all the facilities (wardrobe, suitcase place, seating bench, bedside tables, hugging the bed, desk) and has different levels. It’s like this diagonal takes the half of the room and swivels it so that the living area separates from the entrance and washing area while they still are in the same space. This light separation is highlighted by the different materials and the lower level of the living area and the obtuse angle where the bed prevails is like a hug that makes this space looks larger.

This diagonal intention is already seen at the corridor at every door, creating a small hall/corner in the same materials to slowly introduce you to the room’s idea.

Room’s layout

Some other details are: The façade’s perforated wooden panels, in fish bone motif, that let the natural light enter the room but through a filter. So that you can have all the view while being protected. In combination with the mantel seating nook besides you can have all the outdoors’s feeling in an interior safety and privacy. It’s what we call the “inside out” but in the opposite direction!

The wardrobe with the built-in mini bar make a sophisticated structure like posh large stones, in a monumental mood but with a light and airy touch of the suspended hanger. There you hang your clothes in the open so that you have your “back home” touch etc. Every user’s clothes will change the image of the room every time.

Technology. We used technology only in our minds because nothing can be seen in the room’s desing but it was a big issue for us, even in idea level. We’ve though that a vertical panel that integrates the TV will lead the user’s stay. This interactive glass touch screen will display various applications related to the room facilities, the communication with the hotel and the city guide-visit organizer.

Regarding the room facilities you will be able -except of interfering with the heat/air conditioning- load lighting programs, music programs, depending on the mood. Also, you can make appointments with the cleaning services of the hotel, set alarms and other facilities of room service, order a meal or whatever!

Regarding the city guide/trip organizer you will be able to organize your visit, sightseeing, shopping, hot spots of the town, the best bars/restaurants etc. through a set up guide by the hotel or another company like timeout or others or even by other users that saved some proposals by their visit. It would be great if you could choose what you’d like to do/visit and an app will create tours for you and proposes themed walks. Of course, you should be able to connect with your smartphone so that you can have the guide with you all day. It will be like an info portal expanded in wall dimensions that could make your trip super easy and fun!

I’m very interested in your opinions and very thrilled for comments! Feel free to share what you think!

Summer weekend!

ntouz summer2

Here I am again! I make some appearances now and then just not to forget me! Always – always! when I don’t show up in the blog it means I’m working without mercy. The last month was one of these periods, I participated at 2 big projects at the same time. With deadlines the past week, so much pressure, agony if we’re gonna make it, condensed creativity and decisions! Very intense as every time, but as everything went well eventually I’m  very satisfied and happy now that’s gone! And of course ready for real life again!!

This weekend was the first after this whole time that I could rest! Ohh…such a pleasure!!! I took care of my plants, I went out for walks by the sea, night and day, ate seafood, drank wine and ouzo, ate ice cream, I was hit by the sun so that I grumble about it and started having summer thoughts! This was the best one. I already make plans for quick excursions and imagine myself lying on the beach pebbles aaaaaaall day…

However, after this daydreaming post I will have to get back to work again, because work never ends lately…(steep landing!) but I have hope now, everything is under control! I say to myself… 🙂

Let’s have a cool shower to cope with the heat and continue our day!

Have a nice Sunday, you all! xoxo

Here I am again to continue the kawaii spirit on patterns! I made the promise and I kept it! Anyway, I absolutely love them, so it’s really fun creating these collections. This time I gathered more girly stuff, cute animals, yummy delicacies and combinations of them!

Just imagine a Japanese girl wearing such a vintage watch on her wrist, she writes a love letter as she talks on the phone with her best friend, wearing pink bows on her hair and stroking her cute cat that licks the nutella jar on the floor!!

See here the first part of the collection (and learn what kawaii is if you don’t know) for even more cuteness in repeat!

Summer weekend’s thought

218230bacf8e74fc30fc7b5d44fef7a1

Good morning there! Despite the working mode of this weekend I have a very summery mood, especially in the morning, when the sun is shinning but the world hasn’t been waken up yet. This quite moments are my favorite during the day, very peaceful! Although the summer vacations are very very away for me I already imagine myself taking my breakfast in such an environment like the above, an open air patio with a sea view. Just paradise..! I love everything in this photo, the simplicity, the greatness of nature, the serenity, the chair and the large cushion on the rocks!

So, for me this weekend is full of work, because the next month will be very exhausting as I realize. This should be pointed out on kids choosing architecture! “My kid, you know..you won’t have a peaceful summer never again!” “You must forget the nice tan you used to have on summer!” It’s a fact that the most of the projects happen during summer, so unfair! At least today I’m going to work from home, quietly I hope.
If I manage to close my ears on this super cute tiny kitten that begs me to adopt under my balcony!! Real torture!!!
Have a nice Sunday to all of you!! xoxo
